A format determines the structure of your podcast. In other words, a format decides what events will occur and the order of these events in each episode. Deciding on your podcast format is something you should do before you even open your microphone to record an episode. When someone asks me to explain how a format works I use this basic analogy of chocolate eggs (sorry I’m always thinking of food!!)

For the last week I’ve been in London covering the royal wedding for my Radio show back in Australia. It’s really been a wonderful experience. London is an incredibly alive place normally, but this royal wedding has really transformed the city and the people in it.

Just recently I found out that my Radio station is sending me to London to cover the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. I’ve checked my passport and it’s still valid and as far as I’m aware, I don’t have any convictions so I’m ready to go! I’ll be there for a total of 7 days and will be on air for 5 of those. I’ll be doing my regular drive show from a studio in London that will then be beamed live back to Australia (I know crazy!)

I don’t often use scripts when I’m on air as a Radio DJ, but I know a lot of DJ’s that do. As you probably know, the goal of any Radio DJ or podcaster is to connect with their audience and the main way to do this is by engaging with them in a conversational and relaxed tone.

1. It’s too hard.

I don’t know about you but I find it far easier to ‘speak’ something, than to write it.  And at a guess I’d say most people agree. If it were the other way round we’d spend all day communicating with each other through Word docs.
