Are You Listening To Your Listeners?

Every good Radio DJ knows that talking behind a microphone is a two way street.  There’s the part where we speak to our audience and then the part where they talk to us.

What do you do when you get an email or tweet from a listener? Do you acknowledge it or stick it in the “later” basket?

If you aren’t connecting with your listeners when they’re trying to connect with you then you’re missing out on a great opportunity to strengthen the loyalty of your audience and your brand

Listening habits of mainstream Radio have changed considerably over the last 10 years and for a while, there I wasn’t sure if Radio would keep up. The overnight invention of social media 2.0 has meant that as well as consuming content, listeners want to contribute much more than they ever have before.

So every day as part of my Radio show I have a number of different platforms for my listeners to get directly in touch with me. Some old, some new.

  1. The phone
  2. A text message
  3. Facebook page
  4. Twitter
  5. Email
  6. Chatroom

That is a huge difference to when I started in Radio – listeners only had one way to contact the DJ and that was the phone. Wow how things have changed.

The six platforms above are legitimate ways for a listener to get my attention and a response from me. And everyday I make sure I’m across all of them. Because if there’s something worse than not having a listener platform it’s having one but not interacting with it.

So during my daily three-hour show I post on my FB wall, or read out a text message etc. Now this isn’t mind blowing content that I’m putting out there by any means. Because it doesn’t need to be, this is an exercise in interaction not delivering valuable content (because I’m doing that on air).

It’s saying to your listeners “I hear you”, “I agree”, “I disagree”… whatever you want – just as long as it’s something! Times have changed,  listeners don’t just want to listen to you…they want you to listen to them.

Do this in your own podcast and you’ll not only build a loyal audience but you’ll start to notice great content ideas spring up out of nowwhere and you might even make some new friends!

Good luck and keep your ears open!
